常常被問到學英文的秘訣是什麼? Chooko總是回答「背單字」，因為傳達心中想法的意思時，文章、句子、片語都是由單字組成的，想要用英文傳達自己的想法，最基本的就是了解單字的意思。後來想想這樣的回答有點不負責任，其實我的背單字，跟大家習以為常的寫單字卡背單字(高中應付考試時有用過，但雖然當時有背起來，現在也忘得差不多了^^”)，是不太一樣的。
首先要有好奇心
Chooko的單字來自生活中的「求甚解」，工作上看到的新生字、舶來品上的原文字、影集電影字幕的生字、喜愛歌手的新歌歌詞、滑臉書看到的新鮮事，都在範疇之中，一點一點累積，不求速成， 常常問自己「這個英文要怎麼說呢?」，慢慢就會進步囉! 回想起來，Chooko正式學英文已經17年，學日文也快要10年了呢!
再來要心存敬畏膜拜Google大神
這幾天看到的生字是lustre，通常膜拜Google大神，會先跳出來的搜尋結果是維基百科，查了一下發現常用兩個意思分別屬於兩個完全不搭嘎的領域，在資訊科技領域，是一種平行分散式檔案系統，由Linux和Cluster這兩個字組合在一起的，因為是專有名詞，知道一下就好囉；而在礦物學或製造業的領域中，是一種表面處理的效果像是鑽石、水晶切割後發出的光芒，或是霧面金屬產生曖曖內含光的七彩珠光色澤，也有點像這幾年流行的水銀反光墨鏡。是不是迷人又神祕呢? 如果你跟Chooko一樣是視覺記憶取向的人，建議可以用Google圖片去搜尋那個生字，會比較容易記起來喔！

進一步查字典
通常我會至少查兩個字典，習慣用Oxford Learner’s Dictionary和Cambridge Dictionary字典。為什麼都查英英字典呢? 讓我們繼續看下去～看到最後就會發現啦!

原來絲線、頭髮的光澤，和銀河(有點像金屬)的明滅星光，也可以用lustre來形容呢!
盡量記住衍伸的用法
了解了基本的意思後，抽象的用法就比較好理解了。如上面1.2的 ‘a celebrity player to add lustre to the line-up’ 就是指明星歌手成為排隊人潮中的亮點喔!
